Luvin’ the Tuesday night group rides

This ride is just about as good as it can get; 34 miles with the cool down; it has some good climbs and just a good descents.  It is in the country and scenic as it can be.  The sun hits off a pond, there are cows and horses, tall grass and crops.  It is just a darn good ride =)

Bikes, Dogs, old injuries, wine and books

So, as I sit here drinking a glass of wine I am reflecting on the day and wondering what the heck.  First, our group ride had a bunch of new riders who are training for the Augusta Half Ironman and have never ridden in a group.  So our fearless leader decided to give a very detailed info briefing on the hazards of riding in a group and how to “crash” the proper way just incase……..well 4 miles into the ride out run the dogs, down goes our fearless leader as he runs over the dog, then the girl behind me runs over his bike and down she goes….blood, chaos, bikes in a pile, just a freaking mess.  I check the bikers, then head off to find the dog….thank god all were fine other than a few scraps, raspberries, cracked helmets and torn clothes.  So, the ride was uneventful after that, normal easy Saturday ride with a few sprints and some fun, but for the most part a very normal saturday ride.  A friend noticed my rear wheel was a little out of true, so when I get back to the shop to have it checked, it was out of true because He-Man had broke a spoke and my rim was rubbing on the break, (no wonder I bonked on Thursday)  Remember you must take care of your equipment, or else you will pay the price.  So, then I get home and decide to do the swim I have been thinking about for a few day to see if I should do the Half Ironman……what!  I forgot that I stopped swimming 20 years ago because of the shoulder injury I suffered playing college basketball, and 200 yards into the swim i remembered why I don’t swim.  So, after a 1000 yards of breast stroke and crawl, I decided to stop, come home, uncork some wine and started to read my newly purchased book the the Triathletes Training Bible to see if there was any hope for me to actually continue this journey.   I then google the Total Immersion technique for swimming and realized I need to stop fighting the water….seems kind of zen so I am going to give this a try.  As for my goals, right now it is not to drown in the Savannah River, but considering the self fulling prophecy that our fearless ride leader preached this morning, we will not discuss that again….. my goal is to complete the half ironman in under 6 hours.  There I said it and it is out there!

Six gap or Half Ironman? That is the question!

Well, I need some advice…..I am a cyclist, former runner, and really not much of a swimmer, and I have a dilemma.  I have headed to north georgia the last weekend of Sept every year for the last 3 years running to participate in one of the most fun rides in my area, 14,000 feet of ascent over the six highest mountains in Ga, to include the famous Hog Pen Gap climb which is 15% grade in some part and 7 plus miles long.  The ride draws over 3000 cyclist and is just down right fun.  Or I can start training today and participate in my local and inaugural, Augusta Half Ironman, by the way, I have never done a real triathlon, have participated in a few adventure type ones, but never an actual triathlon…..so there is my dilemma.       I am open to recommendations…….Bueller?,  Bueller?  Bueller?   anyone?

“I want a new drug!”

So, I am not sure why I decided to start running again….but I did, “I guess I want a new drug”  I used to be a runner and mountain biked for fun.  I used to run 5ks, 10ks and the occasional longer runs, too include a couple marathons.  I wasn’t super fast (5:45-6:30 pace @ 10K), but in the smaller venues, I almost always placed in the top 3 in my age group.  Even won a race or two.  But about three years ago, I decided to attempt to qualify for the Boston Marathon.  I ran missed it by 9 minutes…..and my knees were sore for a month.  So, I decided to slow down on the running and start biking again.  I mountain bike raced that summer and loved it.  I also got bit by the road cycling bug, and loved that even more than running or mountain biking.  For the first three months I kept up the running while I was biking.  I noticed my fitness and improvement in both the running and cycling was incredible.  So, for some reason I stopped running.  I noticed a dip in my cycling performance, but figured it was do to peaking at the end of the season and not riding as much during the off season.   But to honest, I never got back to the shape I was in when I was doing both.  So, for now I am going to attempt to run at least 2 days a week to supplement my cycling.  I am also implementing a new core Wii fitness program, lol believe it or not I know the Wii fitness works and since I have it in the house I might as well use it.  Got to love the 80’s music!
